Hold On Tight To Your Dreams

« on: February 22, 2008, 11:06:43 am »

My PC has died.  What appears to have happened is I left it on overnite and now the power button does not function and I can not boot up the computer.  This poses several problems.  I can not print from my laptop as the wireless router does not function without the PC booted up.  It is an older computer and not sure if it is worth investing the money to repair.  However, I do need to retrieve all the data on it.

Any Suggestions??? Please??? praying.gif

Addit, sorry to hear about this.....

try unplugging it and giving it awhile, then re-plug it in and try to reboot it.... maybe a computer repair shop, if you call them, can give you suggestions on how to retreive the information on your hard drive without charging you an arm and a leg.

i'm sorry, i dont think i helped that much. Sad

the goblin had received a PM from the poster, and had explained her situation as follows:

In the case the a hard drive dies, the computer will still react to the power on button, it just won't arrive at post(show the windows desktop) so this bad because the data on the harddrive if it is truly dead is lost

whereas as in the case here the computer itself is not reacting to the power on switch, meaning that the  hard drive is uneffected, just that for one reason or another the computer is switched off, good because one can retrieve one data from the hard drive, but since the computer will not switch on, the two ways of getting one data back need for the computer to be opened and the hard drive either slaved to another computer, or placed in a hard drive caddie and connected to another computer

the problem here is most likely a dead fanbox, (that noisy box in the back of the desktop), to be honest to replace the box is easy but the box powers the other part of the computer, it is not as easily changeable like ram or hard drive or CDrom drive so the shop will probably charge quite a lot of some to do it, making the repair probably cost the same price as buying a cheap desktop, whereas to slave or caddie the drive is probably simpler for the shop

either way, the important thing here is getting at ones data, and the lesson to be learned is that data should be cross backed up(have the same data two ways in case one of those ways fail)

somehow the goblin felt that the cross backing idea needed to be explained further, as in post 2575 in this link below

Don't spill your tea on your computer. My mother in law accidently  fried her computer by accidently spilling her tea unto her computer.
