Unless you have the Spybot S&D option 'Lock homepage from changes' active, or your system administrator put this into place, have HijackThis fix this.
O7 - Regedit access restricted by Administrator
Always have HijackThis fix this, unless your system administrator has put this restriction into place.

Layered Service Providers (LSPs)
http://www.castlecops.com/LSPs.html
O11 - Extra group in IE 'Advanced Options' window
The only hijacker as of now that adds its own options group to the IE Advanced Options window is CommonName. So you can always have HijackThis fix this.
O12 - IE plugins
Most of the time these are safe. Only OnFlow adds a plugin here that you don't want (.ofb).
O13 - IE DefaultPrefix hijack
These are always bad. Have HijackThis fix them.
O14 - 'Reset Web Settings' hijack
If the URL is not the provider of your computer or your ISP, have HijackThis fix it.
O15 - Unwanted sites in Trusted Zone
Most of the time only AOL and Coolwebsearch silently add sites to the Trusted Zone. If you didn't add the listed domain to the Trusted Zone yourself, have HijackThis fix it.

O19 - User style sheet hijack
In the case of a browser slowdown and frequent popups, have HijackThis fix this item if it shows up in the log. However, since only Coolwebsearch does this, it's better to use CWShredder to fix it.

AppInit_DLLs and Winlogon Notify
http://www.castlecops.com/O20.html
O21 - ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad Registry key autorun
This is an undocumented autorun method, normally used by a few Windows systemHijackThis uses a whitelist
of several very common SSODL items, so whenever an item is displayed in
the log it is unknown and possibly malicious. Treat with extreme care.
components
ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad
http://www.castlecops.com/O21.html
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler Registry key autorun
This is an undocumented autorun for Windows NT/2000/XP only, which
is used very rarely. So far only CWS.Smartfinder uses it. Treat with care.
Shared Task Scheduler
http://www.castlecops.com/O22.html
O23 - Windows NT Services
This is the listing of non-Microsoft services. The list should be the same as the one you see in the Msconfig utility of Windows XP. Several trojan hijackers use a homemade service in adittion to other startups to reinstall themselves. The full name is usually important-sounding, like 'Network Security Service', 'Workstation Logon Service' or 'Remote Procedure Call Helper', but the internal name (between brackets) is a string of garbage, like 'O? ’ŽrtñåȲ$ Ó'. The second part of the line is the owner of the file at the end, as seen in the file's properties.
Note that fixing an O23 item will only stop the service and disable it. The service needs to be deleted from the Registry manually or with another tool. In HijackThis 1.99.1 or higher, the button 'Delete NT Service' in the Misc Tools section can be used for this.

This tut is ongoing to be revised but the idea is to make a list of the tools that are used in HJT log reading, a kind of reverse enginering of HJT logs. This is because even if one is aware that X or Y entry is bad, if one doesn't know the tool which is being used for then, it is hard to recognised the malware, whereas if you know what the tool is for, you get a good idea of what is going on even if you cannot recognise the entries themselves. Best not to play with the tools, so haven't added the direct links which one can get from the site anyway.

momx2, the goblin is a linux penguin and not to be trusted, "...in the land of the computer illiterate the computer dyslexic is king..." mused the goblin but the truth was that windows had moved beyond him too

Just got back from Best Buy with the Vista Computer. Since Verizon Telephone is paying for it I selected a 23" screen

The ceiling they were willing to pay was $1200 so LOL $1159 out the door

This afternoon and evening will be moving everything out of this dinky room and clean it --- first in three years

windows update and repair with CD problem(repairing with CD now turns off windows updates so here is the batch file to mend it)

Step 1. Open Notepad

 Step 2. Copy and paste the following command lines into the Notepad window (the /s switch runs the commands silently, freeing you from having to press Enter after each line):

 regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
 regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
 regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
 regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
 regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
 regsvr32 /s wups.dll
 regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

 Step 3. Save the file to your desktop, using a .bat or .cmd extension.

 Step 4. Double-click the icon of the .bat or .cmd file.

 Step 5. A command window will open, run the commands, and then close.

mousekey, explained

to use mousekeys
(without changing settings)
- press: shift + alt + numlock
(mousekeys windows appears)
- press: enter

to use the numbers for calculation while the mousekeys function is on
- press: alt + numlock

to end using the mousekeys function
- press: shift + alt + numlock
- press once: right arrowkey
- press: enter

numeric keypad directions and functions
(hold numbers down to move)
8 = move up,
2 = move down
6 = move right
4 = move left
5 = click it
(+) = double click
(-) = right hand click
insert = drag it
delete = drop it(use with insert)

in changing to mouse keys please note, that although it is simple to change to mousekeys, their speed is very slow so I suggest here first changing the speed settings of them, and probably you won't have a mouse to do it with

to change the settings of the mousekeys without a mouse
- press: shift + alt + numlock
(mousekeys windows appears)
- press twice: right arrowkey
(setting)
- press: enter
- press once: right arrowkey
(settings)
- press: enter
(setting for mousekeys window)
- press: tab
(top speed index)
- press to miximum: right arrow
- press: tab
(acceleration index)
- press to miximum: right arrow
- press four times: tab
(OK)
- press: enter
(closes window)
- pres tab last time
(OK)
- press: enter

o make an invisible folder(no text, no icon)

- make a folder on your screen,
(don't care about the name)
- right hand click and choose: properties
- click tab: customise
- click: change icon
(change icon for new folder folder appears)
- look for the padlock icon
- click on the blanc space right of the padlock icon
- click: ok
- click: apply
(folder is invisible but text remains)
- hightlight the text of the folder
- press and hold down the keyborad button: alt
- type with number pad: 255
- release the keyboard button: alt
- click icon to set

[footnote: one is supposed to tick in my computer the folder options to 'hide extensions for known type of file' which I have not done]
[footnote2: if you want to make a second invisible folder in the same place, it is alt+255 then alt+255 again, reads as double blanc folder]
