"..hi..." said the goblin "...Ok, I know I am on linux but that doesn't mean that I should just throw away my XP canned replies, who know something here might help you in better running the error of your ways..." said the goblin who would start posting tuts(tutorials) below knowing that most people here probably knew them anyway

to make an invisible folder(no text, no icon)

- make a folder on your screen,
(don't care about the name)
- right hand click and choose: properties
- click tab: customise
- click: change icon
(change icon for new folder folder appears)
- look for the padlock icon
- click on the blanc space right of the padlock icon
- click: ok
- click: apply
(folder is invisible but text remains)
- hightlight the text of the folder
- press and hold down the keyborad button: alt
- type with number pad: 255
- release the keyboard button: alt
- click icon to set
[footnote: one is supposed to tick in my computer the folder options to 'hide extensions for known type of file' which I have not done]
[footnote2: if you want to make a second invisible folder in the same place, it is alt+255 then alt+255 again, reads as double blanc folder]

an error message(bsod) tells one what the error is, whereas auto reboot doesn't, therefore it's best to turn off auto reboot

to turn off auto reboot:
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r button
- paste this in slot: sysdm.cpl @0,3
- press: enter
- find in blue: startup and recovery
( just above the line: system startup, system failure, and debugging infomation)
- click button: settings
- unclick box: automatically restart
once done
the error message can be understood here

"...not a bad idea Big Booper, lots of malware removal products out there..." said the goblin thinking it was time to bring in the idea of spring cleaning the system using runbox commands, so he thought would just put that up as his next post.

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)

deleting the prefetch files
-----------------------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: prefetch
- press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
- press: ctrl + a
(select all is the same)
- press: shift + del
(deletes without prompt)

disc clean up
---------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons:winkey + r
- paste: cleanmgr.exe
- choose drive(normally C: )
- press: enter
(this process can take a long time)

checkdisk
------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: chkdsk /f /r
- press: enter
( black window appears)
- press: Y button
- press: enter
- reboot the comp
(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be
lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)

disc defragmenter
----------------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: dfrg.msc
- press enter
(this process can take a long time)

deleting internet cookies, files and history
-------------------------------------------------
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r button
- paste in the slot: inetcpl.cpl
- press: enter
- click: delete cookies
- click: delete file
- click: clear history

disable unwanted startups
------------------------------
runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste: msconfig
- press: enter
- click tab: start ups
- keep: the AV and firewall entriies enabled,
- disable: 100% unused or unneeded entries
- Unsure about the start up: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
(IMPORTANT: enable all startups before running the Hijackthis program)

footnote: the goblin somehow know that the moment one posts about deleting the prefetch, someone points out that it does not speed up things to do so nor is performance gained by it, which the goblin too knew to be true, but then again when one removes programs form appwiz.clp orphans can often be left causing glitches in the windows system, so since the goal is as stated cleanup and not performance gaining, this process remains are standard since the goblin also reminded himself that one only has to do a search on a malware removal forum under prefetch and a whole series of nasties can be found there within.

I tend to use runcommands and hotkeys in replys, with a canned below filling out the blancs as I go

QUOTE
run command
- press: winkey + r button
- type:
- press: enter

if the person comes back to me with "dude, what's the winkey" or "why go the long way" I known the level of the person I am dealing with and can adjust accordingly. And a lot of times the poster is happy that he has learned a new trick so it is a double plus for him, personally I don't remember the last time I went for devmgmt.msc, appwiz.cpl, sysdm.cpl, desk.cpl the long way, I mean if it is done through the runbox once, the second time I just types the first letter or two and it offers me the target.

Also, it helps when swiping stuff from the screen, for example:

run command
- press: winkey + r
- type:wordpad
- press: enter
- press: alt + tab
(switch screen)
- highlight text with mouse
(ctrl + a is too messy for me)
- press: ctrl + c
- press: alt + tab
- press: ctrl + v
- alt + F4
- press ctrl + s
(save text as)
write title
- press enter

[footnote; about 10seconds.]

also, inflicting my canned replies on posters
preparation:
- a folder containing canned is already minimised to taskbar

process:
- alt + tab
(to minimised folder on tastbar)
- arrow to folder
- press: enter
- ctrl + a
- ctrl + c
- alt + tab
- ctrl + v
- winkey + m
(all windows down to taskbar)
- alt + tab
(to original Internet window)

to spell check any post while writing it:
(oh, and yes you can use the mouse but this is quicker)

preparation:
http://www.spellcheck.net/
(a spell checking site, there are many)
add above link to favorites

process
- press: ctrl + a
(sellect all)
- press: ctrl + c
(copy)
- press: ctrl + n
(make exact copy of window)
- press: ctrl + i
(opens favorites)
- arrow down to spellchecker site
- press: enter
(spell checker site)
- press tab three times
- ctrl + v
(paste)
- press:correct text

then cut/paste new text back to other page
same commands except use
alt + tab (changing window)
in place of ctrl + n (copying window)

"...hi dewmik, I am not sure if you are joking but your winkey will already be on the keyboard as the button that looks like Micro$oft's flag, one just presses it with the r button, anyway, I think I had better put the winkey combination hotkeys up for your then though you probably know them too..." said the goblin

Use Ad-Aware since it's free why not. Browser cache comes up often as a fault. Ask.com took me throjugh the steps to remove old files. Seems to run alittle faster

Explorer  still pops up with probs but not as often

at this point the reader might be wondering why someone should learn how to use the runbox but then again, most targets that one uses in windows are the same ones day after day, so if one learns those that one uses most one only has to press the target line in the runbox once and the target appears but then the second time one only has to type the firs letter of the target and it offers the target meaning that it is much quicker than going to the target by mouse clicking, for example try commands like inetcpl.cpl, desk.cpl, and then try going to the same window by using the mouse, result, the runbox is much quicker the second time as it is only

- press buttons: winkey + r
- arrow down to target
- press: enter
(your target window appears)

ah, but the goblin was a penguin so he felt himself wishing that he knew how to do this on linux, but that was to come he thought, and windoze was never going to be an understandable system, it was after all, hidden from the enduser(non open source)

Whenever the goblins gets a document in word and it is all caps or all lower case or how about you type a whole sentence in word in caps by mistake and have to delete the whole line and re type it all. well in word he simply HIGHLIGHTS the sentence or words, press shift + F3 and it will alternate from all caps to all lower case to caps on first letter of each word to caps on first letter of each sentence.

"...post what you like Big Booper..." said the goblin knowing those posts would get better as Big Booper grew in style but the goblin had so many more posts to put up that he wondered how he should go about it in that just because he had learned that windows is leaseware he was still fond of his tuts and this was his way giving them to people who still believed in XP even if they saw daily the mess it caused them, Big Booper's IE problem was repeated on millions of other computers, windows would never be free of malware he goblin had concluded
